Abstract

The general aim of this study was to examine the factors of violence in the romantic relationships of young people. There was 1133 participants involved in the research, 288 males and 845 females in the age range from 16 to 26. The results were collected through online survey that consisted Straus Revised Conflict Tactics Scales, Partnership Violence Belief Scales and Violence on Women Belief Scales. The results show several important revelations. Female and male participants do not differ in the level of estimation of their own aggression in relationships. Female participants more often use negotiating techniques during conflicts with their partner, however they are also more verbally aggressive, while male participants more often tend to pressure their partners into unwanted sexually related actions. The youngest participants use less negotiating techniques; they are more physically violent and cause injuries to their partners more than older participants. Male participants agree more with commonly accepted but untrue beliefs about violence in partnerships and attitudes about its triggers. Also, the youngest participants agree more with commonly accepted but untrue beliefs about violence in partnerships and attitudes about its triggers comparing to older participants. The last finding points out that the more aggressive participants see themselves the more they agree with commonly accepted but untrue beliefs about violence in partnerships and attitudes about its triggers.
