Abstract

Volunteering is a non-profit and non-paid activity through which individuals can contribute to the well-being of their local community or the entire society, it comes in different forms and includes local and international volunteer ventures. The aims of this research were to look into adolescent volunteering characteristics and determine whether there were differences in volunteering attitudes, Big Five personality dimensions, self-esteem, altruism and emotional empathy between volunteers and non-volunteers, as well as among volunteers themselves depending on their volunteering length of time and motivation. For this purpose, multiple measures were used: a questionaire on general attitudes towards volunteering, IPIP 50 Junior, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Altruism Scale and Emotional Empathic Tendency Scale. 112 adolescents took part in this research, 56 volunteers and 56 non-volunteers. It was determined that volunteers in most cases have a more positive attitude towards volunteering than non-volunteers. Volunteers also acheived significantly higher results than non-volunteers on the Altruism Scale and Emotional Empathic Tendency Scale.
