Abstract

Data for this paper was collected as a part of the project Presence and Availabiliy of Weapons in Adolescent Population in Croatia. The aim of the paper was to predict adolescents' aggression level based on weapon availability variables (war exposition level, crime rate and perception of the weapon availability), size of the schooling place, gender and age. A sample of adolescents (N=1044) from 14 Croatian towns completed adjusted Aggression Scale (Orpinas and Frankovski, 2001) and Perception of Weapon Availability questionaire (Blažević i sur., 2007.) alongside the socio-demographic characteristics. In adition the war exposition level and crime rate data was collected. The results showed that boys percieve weapons more available than girls as the vocational school students in comparisson with gymnasium and primary school students. There was no difference in perception of weapon availability between gymnasium and primary school students. Boys were more agressive than girls and gymnasium students were less agressive than primary and vocational school students. There was no difference between primary and vocational school students. Obtained results are similar to the age and gender difference in agressivity and weapon related behaviors as seen in most research. The combination of predictors - gender, age, size of the schooling place, war exposition level, crime rate and perception of the weapon availability explaned 12.6% of the variance of adolescents' aggression level. Only gender, age and adolescents' perception of the weapon availability were signifficant predictors. We concluded that these predictors are not sufficient to explain adolescents' agressivity level and should be considered among other family and delinquency variables
