Abstract

World statistics show that number of suicides among adolescents increase rapidly. Knowledge about attitudes toward suicide can be useful in suicide prevention and intervention. The purpose of this research was to investigate information and knowledge about suicide, attitudes toward suicide and interest for education about suicide among psychologists and pedagogues with different sociodemographic features, in high schools in Croatia. They are often in contact with young people and they are educators and creators of programmes of prevention. In three occasions, 145 online questionnaire responses were received. The participants were asked to answer questions about their age, gender, profession, work, years of service and name of the town they are employed in. Information and knowledge about suicide and interest for education about suicide were examined. Attitudes toward suicide were examined using Attitudes toward suicide (ATTS) questionnaire. The results suggest that people with less knowledge and information about suicide more strongly believe that suicide cannot be predicted and they don't understand suicidal persons. Also, older participants which have more knowledge and information about suicide, more strongly believe that close persons and relations with them have influence on suicide decision. Younger participants and those who believe that suicide can be predicted and understand suicidal persons and those who more strongly believe that close persons and relations with them have influence on suicidal behavior, show more interest for education about youth suicide.
