Abstract

The breakup of the first romantic relationship is often a dramatic event in the life of an individual that leaves a strong effect on them. The goal of this study was to examine the correlation between the attribution of reasons for the breakup of the first serious romantic relationship, personal assessment of their own mate value, self-model/other and the belief in a just world. The study was conducted on a sample of 406 freshmen from the Faculty of Kinesiology, Polytechnicum Zagreb and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Casual Dimension Scale (CDS), Mate Value (MVI-7), Relationship Scale Questioner(RSQ), Belief in a Just World Scale (BJW) and the Attribution of Reasons for the Breakup of a Romantic Relationship Scale, which was created for the purpose of this study, were applied. The results showed a negative correlation between precieved mate value and the reasons for the breakup attributed to intrenal and global reasons A negative correlation between globality dimension and a belief in a just world was also found. Other-model and the belief that a person will be treated justely is negatively correlated to attribution of reasons for the breakup to uncontrolable factors. The attribution of personal negative characteristics and instability as a reason for the breakup, turned out to be a significant predictor of personal mate value.
