Abstract

This thesis analyzes the etiquette of four moderators (Branimir Bilić, Mislav Bago, Tomislav Jelinčić i Miroslav Lilić) of presidential debates on Croatian television in the second round of presidential elections in 2005 and 2010. The aim of this study was to determine the level of verbal and nonverbal elements of moderator's etiquette based on the perception of fifteen students of phonetics, and by the text analysis in which the arguments against the manners were asked for, such as, ad hominem, ad personam, ad populum and ad baculum. The purpose of this paper is to determine the level of moderator's etiquette so that they can work on the elements in which they are lacking. The results show that moderator’s manners are on a satisfactory level, but, due to the relevance of the format, they should work on some elements of manners such as, the ways of the interruption of the interlocutor, the content and the way of asking questions, diction and gestures. As well, debates abound with arguments which are opposed to good manners, mostly ad hominem and ad personam arguments.
