Abstract

The work “Lyric tragedy as a challenge to the poetics of classicism” shows the path of development of the lyric tragedy as a general term describing the early French opera. It describes the manner in which the cultural heritage of the time helped in the synthesis which culminated in that grandiose genre, a sort of Gesamtkunstwerk of all then extant types of musical and theatrical performances. It describes the unavoidable influence of pastoral drama as a genre that was successful in embracing three different discourses: narrative, poetic and dramatic, as well as its interaction with the “Theatre of Machines” upon which the lyric tragedy will build its complete morphology with the special emphasis on the dramaturgy of meraviglia. After the court ballet; the dance poetic of the century, the work follows the influence of Molière’s genre of comedy-ballets, and especially in versification of the vocal inserts as examples of French poetry adapted to music. Besides Quinault and Lully the key personality presented is that of Pierre Perrin who through his polemic references to the Italian opera showed the way for the lyric tragedy to exist in the poetic regime of the time, that is by the side of the classicistic tragedy so that the French opera becomes homologous, simultaneously presented as double and as a reverse. It is shown how the lyric tragedy accepted the poetical challenge, particularly in interpolation of the classicistic cult of rules. The thematic aspect of Quinault’s librettos in this work is seen from the perspective of its beginnings in the salons of the préciuses and it passes through the prism of the ceremonial and the propagandistic. The work “Lyric tragedy as a challenge to the poetics of classicism” ends with the birth of the French recitative, the absolute musical and vocal companion to the tragic declamation of the Racine era.
