Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine parent-pffspring similarity in perfectionism, to test differential relationship between positive and negative dimensions of perfectionism, and neuroticism and consciousness, and to investigate contribution of certain personality traits to parent-offspring similarity in perfectionism. Family study was used. 195 psychology students and their parents (190 mothers and 177 fathers) participated in the study. Participants completed two questionnaires: APS-R (Slaney et al., 2001) and BFI (John et al., 1991). Mother-offspring correlations, father-offspring correlations and regressions of offspring on midparent score were computed. As expected, mother-offspring correlations and father-offspring correlations were low and positive. Data suggest that mothers and offspring resemble for Discrepancy, and fathers and offspring resemble for all three dimensions of perfectionism (Discrepancy, High standards and Order). Regressions of offspring on midparent score were significant for Discrepancy and Order. Positive dimensions of perfectionism, High standards and Order, were significantly correlated with conscientiousness, whereas negative dimension of perfectionism, Discrepancy, was significantly correlated with neuroticism. Neuroticism contributes to parent-offspring similarity for negative dimension of perfectionism (Discrepancy), and Conscientiousness increases parent-offspring similarity on positive dimension High standards. Conscientiousness doesn`t contribute to parent-offspring similarity on positive dimension Order.
