Abstract

We are witnessing the worsening state of the environment regarding its pollution. Naturally, the biggest damage was caused by man itself. Pollution indicates carrying harmful matter into the environment, thus endangering people, plants, animals and their habitats. Environmental pollution has been present ever since man came into existence, but it assumed such proportions today that a co-effect is needed to insure our, but also the development of future generations. Regarding that, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the methods of polluting soil and water, and waste disposal in the Zagreb area. The city of Zagreb covers districts in which 792.875 people live, according to the census from 2011. The research paper theme is the growth or decrease of utility waste, the problem of liquid waste and drinking water, and waste managing on city level. Residents of the city of Zagreb do not need to worry about the shortage of drinking water yet, but investing into the water-supply network is necessary, because 40 % of water is being lost caught in water pumps. The city of Zagreb is the only city which lies on a river and does not use its potentials, but all waste water goes into the Sava river through the sewage pipes (system). In spite of purifiers, the Sava is not suitable for drinking, and no fish and living organisms are present in it. The situation on the Jakuševac, or Zagreb waste dump, is disturbing and the question is how long will people be able to tolerate the smell and the threat of drinking water pollution. Furthermore, there are containers for waste disposal in the city which could be used, but there is more and more waste and the inhabitants need to become aware of the situation, otherwise everybody will be faced with a health threat. Recycling, composting and using materials that can be used multiple times would decrease the pressure on the environment, and the city of Zagreb could really be an exemplar to others as is the governing's intention.
