Abstract

In the last few decades, thanks to the trends in the world historiography, research into the history of everyday life – and within it, the research into the position of women in medieval society, which has been avoided and made difficult by the relatively scarce references to women in sources – has gained popularity among Croatian historians as well. Similar tendencies can just as well be noted within the context of research into the history of crime on Croatian soil. This paper examines the representation of women in the criminal practices of Zagreb's Gradec between the 1450 and 1480, based on the criminal law records from the 15th century, published as part of the series Historical records of the free sovereign city of Zagreb, the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia: The books of subpoenas and verdicts (Povjestni spomenici slobodnog kraljevskog grada Zagreba priestolnice Kraljevine dalmatinsko-hrvatsko-slavonske: Knjige sudbenih poziva i presuda). The abovementioned source, written in medieval Latin, is of monumental volume but fragmented content, with typified, recurring data, and it has not been fully explored yet. Taking the work of Marija Karbić as the starting point, and applying both a quantitative and a comparative approach, this work represents the analysis of the distribution of crime within the female population, the motives behind those crimes, the judicial treatment of women and their role in different types of lawsuits, the outcomes of trials, the changes in the amount and kinds of crimes during the course of time. The obtained results are compared to the situation in Dalmatian, Istrian, but also in Mediterranean and West European cities, whereby some anomalies from the mean have been noted. In addition, not only that the analysis of these sources failed to confirm specific stereotypes and prejudice against women, but it has actually shown the exact opposite. The research has shown that in most cases women were treated equally as men by the judicial system.
