Abstract

During the first half of 1979, Dubrovnik was struck by two earthquakes measuring 7° MCS and 6° MCS, which caused a lot of damage to its monuments and consequently led to the founding of the Institute for the Restoration of Dubrovnik with the task of organizing and supervising the research and restoration of monuments in the historic center. One of the most important monuments, the Cathedral of Dubrovnik, as an exceptional architectural achievement within Croatian art, a religious center of the city and an urban highlight, was heavily damaged at that time. Its restoration began in 1981, while the research work which resulted in new insights into the history of both the building and the city of Dubrovnik were led by Josip Stošić. Architectural interventions within the sanctuary, based on the project of Ivan Prtenjak, completely changed the interior of the cathedral. The cathedral is inextricably linked to the research and conservation work on Bunić's square, located west of it, which ended in 1988. The spaces beneath the square and the cathedral were intended as a coherent museum area in several projects, none of which has been launched yet. The thesis is deposited in the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Thesis includes: 41 pages, 11.423 words, 26 figures and 48 references. The original is in Croatian language.
