Abstract

The analysis of Stasiuk’s collection of short stories entitled Winter and of its translation into Croatian shows that the semantic layer of the Polish text as well as its imagery were successfully transferred to Croatian, displaying to the reader the originality of the author’s prose. Although Stasiuk’s style is characterised by insistence on detail, by metaphysical contemplations of people, objects and occurrences on the fringes of society and by the exceptionally vivid and rich lexis, for which it is not always easy to fi nd Croatian equivalents, there is no doubt that, in spite of all linguistic and stylistic traps of Stasiuk’s prose, which have been analysed and discussed in this article, we are presented with a successful translation.
