Abstract
Although distant at first glance, Mexican and Croatian cultures have had interesting contacts in the area of cinema, from the earliest days of Croatian narrative film industry. However, this article deals with an interesting example of using the Mexican traditions and the popular (international!) images of Mexico in the work of Tomislav Gotovac/Antonio Lauer, one of the most significant Croatian authors of experimental cinema and conceptual artist (comparable in many ways to Beuys, Warhol and other international stars of this elitist field). The film Proroci uses Mexican popular and artistic imagery (murals made by Diego Rivera, paintings by Frida Kahlo, graphic art by José Guadalupe Posada, photographs taken during Pancho Villa’s uprising, etc. However, the aim of the film is to paint a distinctly Croatian (moving) picture: it is yet another self-portrait of the artist, in which he hides behind the internationally recognisable images (of Lenin, Frida Kahlo, Leon Trotsky…) in order to allude to his own artistic fate and to the fate of the artist in general. Mexican culture of the dead becomes the allusion to death and the tragic fate of Leon Trotsky and countless rebels and fighters become the metaphor for the unpleasant outcome of life in general and artistic career in Croatia in particular.
