Abstract

The paper reviews literature on open access citation advantage. Literature is categorized in three categories. The first category consists of papers that presenting results of citation analysis in different scientific fields. Those papers try to answer question – are open access articles more visible and more cited than those that are not in open access (Harna, Brodey etc.). The papers from the first category also discuss methodological concept for further research. In the second category are the articles that try to find what the reason for open access citation advantage is (Kennicutt, Schwartz, Kurtz etc.). Is it open access itself or there are some other reasons? In the third category are review articles and bibliographies that comment and compare results of previous analyses. Reviewing articles published between 2001 and the beginning of 2013, the paper discusses open access citation advantage in various fields, with the accent on social sciences. The review can be useful to Croatian scientists, to their institutions and libraries as a basis for the implementation of open access model.
