Abstract

During the last 10 years foreign researchers started to show an interest in misconceptions about children's pain. Most of them have only noticed a presence of these misconceptions, while only a few of them have tried to find out the percentage of representation of such misconceptions. Literature search showed that not a single study on this subject has been done in Croatia. With this study we wanted to examine a degree of consent about the beliefs of pain suffered by children, as well as to find out if there is a difference in such beliefs between medical and non-medical workers. The questionnaire was designed for the purpose of the study. It contains 35 statements that refer to children's physical pain. Participants (medical and non-medical workers, N=251) had been asked to rate on 5-point scale how strongly they agree or disagree with each statement. The results show presence of misconceptions about children's pain. Also, a difference was noted between medical and non-medical workers. Even though the result for medical workers shows some disagreement, as well some false beliefs on children's pain, it still shows lesser agreement compared to non-medical workers. Examining the whole sample, the agreement with misconceptions about children's pain is smaller then in foreign studies. Realizing the presence of misconceptions about children's pain is the first step in changing them. We believe that studies like this one and similar ones, as well, will make betterment process possible. With that, children should get appropriate treatment in painful situations and they should not suffer unnecessary pain, which could reduce clinical complications.
