Abstract

The paper emphasizes the significance of interdisciplinarity as a 21st century teaching approach whose role especially comes to the fore in Visual Arts classes because it both encourages students' creativity and the development of critical thinking. By analysing elementary and secondary school Visual Arts curricula and by exploring their use in education systems of Slovenia, Finland, Canada (Ontario) and North Carolina (the USA) we tried to give a proper context for the Visual Arts within Croatian education, with distinct emphasis on the use of interdisciplinarity in Visual Arts classes in Croatian secondary schools. We are trying to highlight the role of Visual Arts subjects in the education of children and youth but at the same time we are also stating the issue of subjects' small number of hours which significantly limits the use of interdisciplinary approach in the class. Apart from the programme and lesson hours, the use of interdisciplinarity also depends on teacher's initiative which can be seen in positive examples from Croatian high schools. The paper also enumerates various possibilities for the interdisciplinary use in Visual Arts classes, which also make different types of connection between the Visual Arts teaching material and other subjects and these are: casual correlation, making connections through cultural-historical context, lesson-based correlation and correlation on a specific work of art.
