Abstract

This thesis presents information on the normal development of primary school children, the visual and auditory processing disorders of a child with cerebral disorder and thus with special educational needs and the case of a girl, primary school pupil, whose teaching assistent I was for two years. The normal development of a child aged between 8 and 10 has been presented through different areas. However, the emphasis is on the speech development. A child's speech development starts at its birth with its first shriek then continues with coos, gurgles, cries, babbles, squeals, Children start to use words around twelve months. Children acquire speech sounds when they are 5 and a half years old. Speech development is important for auditory and visual processing and by observing these skills disorders that might happen later can be prevented. In the case of a girl presented in the thesis speech and laguage disorders, reading and writing difficulties were caused by cerebral damage/disease. The girl has been integrated in the regular primary school class. As her teaching assistent I was carrying out the therapy techniques in order to facilitate her learning progress and alleviate the difficulties caused by cerebral disease/damage. The Croatian educational system has created the conditions for the inclusion of children with special educational needs, based on the legal acts and regulations. The inclusion implies modern teaching methods, cooperative learning, variety of content, individualized programmes, the continuous professional training of teachers, additional assistance through rehabilitation programmes and engaging teaching assistants, etc.
