Abstract

This thesis describes relationships between the Republic of Dubrovnik and Ottoman Empire through ages. Many archival series in the State Archives of Dubrovnik are witnesses of that special relation. Among those archival series there is one special called Acta Turcarum which is result of it. This series follows destiny of mentioned relationsuntilthe period when the Republic was officially abolished and a short period after. The correspondence between Dubrovnik and other countries was one of the repsonsibilitiesof Slavic chancellery. After Ottomans had come, it was among the responsibilities of Turk chancellery. Because of the letter and language of the documents which were kept in the Turk chancellery, its clerks were called dragomans (translators for Ottoman language). Dragomans were in charge of Ottoman documents which they translated into Croatian or Italian language but also were helping to the government officials by translating their letters to Ottoman dignitaries into Ottoman language. In addition, the dragomans were also responsible for the documents' keeping, classifiying and inventoryng. Ottoman documents which are kept in the Archive are following: Ottoman documents, bujrultu, fetve, huccet, ilam, arz and letters. Ottoman documents also contain ferman, berat – charter, ahdnama and hatt-ı hümayun. After the Republic period, all documents in the Archive had very dramatic destiny which especially affected Ottoman documents. Probably, we shall never know how many of them were destroyed during the Republic and after that. In 2002 the Archive set up a project to classify, catalogue and digitise them. Digitization of this series would be a great solution for keeping this series, and also for better access. In the thesis, examples of digitized documents are given as well as possible solutions for further digitization.Digitization process is very long and the Archive should consider if documents are going to be digitized in an institution, or outside of it, all positive and negative sides of the process and also which scanners should be used. As the result of that, number of users could be increased.
