Abstract

Graduate thesis paper is titled "Virtual Ancient Egyptian collections: Croato-Aegyptica Electronica and possibilities of development". In the center of our case studies are existing virtual ancient Egyptian collections. There is a Croatian project Croato-Aegyptica Electronica. Also two international virtual collections, The Global Egyptian Museum and Accessing Virtual Egypt and a collection of one Californian institute King Padibastet's Tour: The Virtual Egyptian Museum. We found that all of these collections have clearly defined goals. The projects are open to international cooperation. The problem is the different categorization of collections and objects in the collection. Therefore, there is a need for establishment of guidelines and standards. Collections recognize children as a special category of users by offering them interesting content for learning. But these activities should be intensified and promoted in schools. There is also the option of personalized collections that allows users a much more active role. Users often use their own social networks to create their own collections. Therefore, the institutions need to recognize this potential of social networks. We have identified a lack of virtualization of ancient egyptian collections in the world's great museums. Users are offered only simple and small galleries and searching options that require some knowledge, because there are no organized categories. The world's great museums should therefore be included in the projects and provide their customers a better insight into the collection. We believe this work is valuable because it opens up a number of questions for further research. We established that Croatia is in trend with the recent events having to worry about ancient Egyptian materials and processes of digitization of cultural heritage. Croato-Aegyptica Electronica has great potential. It can function as a separate collection, but in the future it is desirable to turn to the umbrella project, such as The Global Egyptian Museum.
