Abstract

The goal of this study was to test the effect of the social context on how pain is experienced. Painful stimuli were caused by the circulation of warm air, while the variables measured were duration of pain tolerance, physiological reaction of test subjects (pulse) and the assessment of the degree of discomfort experienced by the test subject during the measuring. The experiment was conducted in two experimental situations (with and without the presence of the passive observer). Each of the N = 31 test subjects included in the final data processing participated in both measuring situations. The study predicted that the presence of the passive observer would prolong the duration of pain tolerance, as well as have an effect on the decrease of the assessment of discomfort during the actual measuring. As expected, statistically significantly greater pain tolerance was found in test subjects in the presence of passive observers. There were differences between the two situations in the subjective assessment of the experience in accordance with the second hypothesis: the test subjects assessed the first measuring (in the presence of the passive observe) as less uncomfortable. The study predicted that there would be no statistically significant difference in pulse of test subjects between the two measuring situations, and the data confirmed this assumption.
