Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate both content of stereotypes about Croats, Bosnians, Slovenians and Europeans as well as stereotype positivity differences related to participants' age and education level. The research included 267 participants. To assess ethnic stereotypes a check list of typical traits was applied. The results have shown similarities between contents of stereotypes about Croatians and Bosnians and also between Slovenians and Europeans. Most positive stereotypes are the ones about Bosnians, and least positive are the stereotypes about Croats and Slovenians. Signifficant group and education level interaction was found but only within stereotypes about Slovenians. We found that participant with higer education level have more positive stereotypes about Slovenians than lower educated participants. The signifficant group, age and eduacation level interaction was also found but only for stereotypes about Slovenians and Europeans. We found that younger, high educated participants have the most postitive stereotype and older, lower educated participants have the least positive sterotype about Slovenians. The most positive sterotype about Europeans were held by younger, high educated participants and the least positive sterotypes are found within older, high educated participants. We also investigated stereotype positivity differences about Europeans regarding participants attitude towards joining the European Union. Participants who supported Croatia joining EU had more positive sterotypes about Europeans than those who were againist it.
