Abstract

Socially desirable responding is usually defined as the tendency to give overly positive selfdescriptions. In this study, independent samples of participants were questioned in three situations. The situations differed in instructions for self-presentation: honest (N=224), fake good - manager (N=249), and fake good - teacher (N=196). Contrary to one-dimensional models of social desirability, Paulhus designed a new questionnaire for measuring socially desirable responding - A Comprehensive Inventory of Desirable Responding (CIDR) that is divided into four dimensions. The aim of this study was to test the metric characteristics of the Croatian version of this questionnaire. CIDR comprises four subscales: Agentic Enhancement, Agentic Management, Communal Enhancement, and Communal Management. Our study showed that metric characteristics were satisfactory: reliability ranges from ±=.67 to ±=.86, sensitivity was quite good and increased in fake good situations, and discriminant validity of items is r=-.10 to r=.64. The study showed that the results on all scales increased when fake good instructions were given. As expected, egoistic bias (Agentic Enhancement and Agentic Management) increased most in fake good - manager situation, and moralistic bias (Communal Enhancement and Communal Management) increased in fake good - teacher situation. The increase was present on management as well as on enhancement scales, what is opposite to the new model of social desirability (Paulhus, 2002). The new model was partially confirmed and further studies are required.
