Abstract

The goal of this study was to clarify the role of women’s shelters in empowering women victims of violence, and to explore the connection of women’s empowerment to achievement of their goals for the future and prevention of re-victimisation. Also, we wanted to learn from the women’s perspective what in-shelter services are the most beneficial after leaving the shelter. We tested the assumption that the more empowered women are, the better their goal-setting for the future will be, which in turn would lead to higher achievement of the goals. The participants in this study were 10 women victims of violence that were recruited in a women’s shelter Duga. We conducted interviews with women victims of violence and with psychologists working in the shelter. Also, we analysed shelter’s written documentation. The interviews with women were conducted during their stay in the shelter and six to ten months after they left. As expected, the connection of women’s empowerment and the quality of their goals for the future was found, but we couldn’t give clear answers to other research questions. This research shows difficulties of maintaining contact with women victims of violence after leaving the shelter.
