Abstract

By defining state as institution having a monopoly on the use of force security studies prefers position of the state. The state is represented as a reference object, as something that is considered to be existentially threatened, and there is a legitimate requirement for survival of it. Barry Buzan's sectoral analysis of security has made an important step forward in state-centric approach in understanding of security and made it clear that military security is only one of the five sectors, alongside with ecological, economic, social and political security. Genetically modified organisms present a great risk for humans and environment. Endangering human security implies a variety of health, political, economic and social risks. Endangerment of ecological security represents emergence of "super weeds" and "super bugs", destruction of biodiversity and other non-genetically modified crops, which is an unsustainable and irreversible process. The ethical implications associated with biotechnology are related to perceiving organisms as machines and denying their fundamental values. EU labels products if the amount of GM content is greater than 0.9%. Although its citizens express distrust towards genetically modified animals and crops, the data show that fields planted with GM crops are growing a year after year.
