Abstract

With this research we wanted to explore the relationship between individual differences in self-determination and the use of self-presentation strategies. We also wanted to explore gender differences in usage of self-presentation strategies. We expected that participants with higher controlled and higher impersonal orientation scores would more frequently engage in self-presentation than participants with higher autonomy scores. The research was conducted on 196 participants (99 men, 96 women), all students at various universities from different cities in Croatia. All participants completed two questionnaires, measures of self-presentation and self-determination. The results indicated that higher controlled and impersonal orientation scores were related to greater usage of self-presentation tactics, while higher autonomy orientation scores were related to the use of fewer self-presenation tactics. The results also indicated that higher impersonal scores were associated with self-presentation tactics oriented on getting assistance and good will from others. Higher controlled scores were associated with self-presentation tactics for bolstering the self-image. The results have shown that gender differences in the use of self-presentation strategies exist, but only in intimidation and ingratiation tactics.
