Abstract

According to Darling and Steinberg's Integrative Model of Parenting (1993), parental values and goals have a direct impact on parenting behavior. The aim of this study was to examine whether parental values determines parental behaviour. Participants were 161 parents of students from the Gymnasium and Trade school in Požega, 75 fathers and 86 mothers, mean age 46.16 years. The data was collected by means of Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Parental Behavior Questionnaire and Schwartz Value Survey. The results of preliminary correlation analysis indicate that parental support was positively associated with self-transcendence, openness to change and conservation. Results also indicate that restrictive control was positively associated with self-enhancement. In order to examine the relative contribution of parental life values to parental behavior, hierarchical regression analysis was performed, in which socio-demographic variables (gender, age and education of parents) were also entered as a separate set of variables. The results have shown that when we control for socio-demographic variables, parental values explain a 22 % of parental support and 12% of restrictive control. Values of conservation and self-enhancement were significant predictors of parental support, whereas self-enhancement and openness to change were significant predictors of restrictive control. None of these values were significant predictors of parental permissiveness. Results showed that parental values determine parental support and restrictive control but not parental permissiveness.
