Abstract

Starting from the model of the determinants of the parenting and interaction model of stress, the aim of this study was to increase the understanding of the experience of parental competence in parents of preschool children and the role of stress in this experience. The study included 323 parents of preschool children from Zagreb, Velika Gorica and Slavonski Brod (169 mothers and 154 fathers). Parents reported the experience of parental competence, which is operationalized with three dimensions (parental self-efficacy, internality and externality) and the measure of general life stress experience. The study examined gender differences in the perception of the life stress of parents and in the dimensions of parental competence and also correlation between parental competence and stress in mothers and fathers. Results showed that mothers report higher levels of life stress and higher degree of parental self-efficacy. On the other hand, the results show that there is no difference between mothers and fathers in parental externality and internality. The experience of life stress of mothers was negatively correlated with the perceived parental self-efficacy and of fathers was positively associated with parental externality. The results are discussed in the framework of the model of the determinants of the parenting and interaction models of stress. The possibility of application of the results in training courses for parents and counseling work with parents is also discussed.
