Abstract

This paper is about phonetic correction according to the principles of Verbothonal method of Petar Guberina which is mostly used in second language acquisition. It is also used in speech and hearing rehabilitation because it is based on human and human abilities. According to the Guberina's theory, in which the speech is essential base, we showed auditive and visual values of spoken language which are used in phonetic correction and in preparing optimal and non-optimal material. This paper also explains other methods of phonetic correction, with giving advantage to Verbothonal method. In second language aquisition students make some specific errors (called system of errors), so mispronunciation of Croation palatal lateral approximant /ʎ/, palatal nasal /ɲ/, postalveolar affricate /ʧ/ and vowels /a/ and /o/ are typical for Bulgarian speakers. This phonetic correction was done in ten session with two students, native speakers of Bulgarian which learn Croatian, by using principles of Verbothonal method with optimal frequency bands and SUVAG Lingua apparatus to achieve appropriate tenseness of the sounds /ʎ/, /ɲ/, /ʧ/, /a/ and /o/. Pronunciation was recorded before and after sessions of correction and results are given according to the perceptive test (by evaluation of pronunciation in sampled words before and after correction) and according to the acoustic analysis (by measuring duration and frequency values of F2) which confirmed the main hypotheses of the paper that after correction students will accomplish better marks of pronunciation, shorter duration and higer F2.
