Abstract

The wine-growing area of northwestern Croatia is made of four wine-growing sub zones. Hrvatsko zagorje-Međimurje subregion, one of the largest subzones of Continental Croatia, consists of nine wine-growing hills. These are Međimurje, Varaždin-breg-Vinica, Ivanec, Krapina-Vinogorje, Zlatarski bregi, Novi Marof, Klanječke gorice-Marija Gorica, Zabok and Stubica wine-growing hills. Viticulture is a notable industrial branch in northwestern Croatia. Hrvatsko zagorje is characterized by great natural conditions and it is not surprising that in this region vine has been cultivated and vineyards raised since ancient times. This paper shows the wine-making tradition of Hrvatsko zagorje, its stability over time and its coexistence with the present. The work touches upon wine-growing tradition of Ivanec area, as part of the tradition of Hrvatsko zagorje, and data collected in the survey prove its incorporation in the northwest wine-growing district, as well as local specifics. The subjects that this paper opens (life with vineyard, vineyard cottage, works and traditions in the vineyard throughout the year) prove that the wine is firmly incorporated in the temporal history of our nation. All these beliefs and traditions associated with wine and vineyards are an indication that our man is closely tied to the land that had once supplied food and tradition which is deeply woven into and lives side by side with the man and is passed on to future generations.
