Abstract

Motivational speech is a special kind of speech on a special occasion. The primary aim of motivational speech is getting the listeners to act and motivate them to complete a certain goal. They are insufficiently present in Croatian rhetoric theory and pedagogy, but their importance is great, taking into consideration the research on participants' attitudes. Seeing there are several different kinds of motivational speeches, the corpora used in this research was limited to speeches of athletes and coaches. The purpose of this research was to determine the importance of motivational speeches for that particular audience, the frequency of delivery of such speeches during their athletic preparation and the rhetorical elements they find to be crucial for motivation. The aim of the research was to compare attitudes of sporting professionals, sports speaking practice and theoretical bases for motivational speeches. The results show that both athletes and coaches find motivational speeches to be important for their success in sports, that they recognize public speaking elements required for motivation, that they have some experience in listening and giving motivational speeches, and most importantly, that they find public speaking education to be a vital part of athletes' education.
