Abstract

This graduate thesis deals with the utilitarian approach to the issue of animal rights. To speak about the utilitarianism and its teachings first we had to present the development of the moral status of animals and their rights throughout the history. This chapter started with the Bible, as a main source of traditional thinking concerning the moral status of animals, and continued with Aristotle, Pythagoras, Plutarch, Thomas Aquinas, René Descartes and Immanuel Kant until the 19th century, when started the intense philosophical discussion regarding above mentioned theme, especially in the philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the founder of utilitarianism. In next chapter it was presented the basic utilitarian philosophical and ethical approach, following primarily works of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Doing so, examined were those elements of their works which support the foundation and justification of animal rights. Third and central chapter is dedicateded to the ethics of Peter Singer. His preferential utilitarianism was described in reference to his works Animal Liberation and Practical Ethics. Focusing on Singer’s theory, in fourth chapter some different approaches are presented. Here the emphasis is put on Joan Dunayer and her book Speciesism, and on Tom Regan and his animal rights theory.
