Abstract

Given the variability of gender roles within different time and contexts, and the numerous limitations of BSRI, the aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of the BSRI for Croatian society. The participants were students of Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Faculty of Mathematics (62 males and 58 females). Students' task was to state the characteristics they considered socialy desirable for males and females in Croatian society. They could number 10 of less characteristics for each sex, and the characteristics could overlap. The procedure resulted with 186 different characteristcs. Analysis resulted with a large number of positive characteristics that were equally desirable for males and females (honesty, goodness, integrity, intelligence, education etc.). Traditionally male and female characteristics emerged in smaller number and with less frequencies. Therefore, statistical analysis of most of these characteristics could not be performed. Comparison of collected characteristic with the items in BSRI showed overlapping of 50 %, and the small frequencies of the overlapping items.
