Abstract

This paper deals with the issue of bipiracy – defininig it as stealing of nature and knowledge. Biopiracy is unauthorized use of bio-cultural resources of indigenous communites conducted by Western countries using patent rights. That impairs biodiversity and consequently causes erosion of cultural practices and also undermines basics of indigenous peoples. The alternative to biopiracy is access benefit sharing based on equitable evaluation and protection of indigenous knowledge and intelectual property of Western and Third world countries.
