Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between styles of humor and facets of neuroticism. The study included 306 participants, average age 29,7, who completed two questionnaires online, Humor Style Questionnaire (HSQ) and part of IPIP300 that refers to neuroticism. Research showed weak but significant correlations between all humor styles and all facets except between affiliative style and anger and immoderation, and between self-enhancing style and immoderation. Facets of neuroticism are positively correlated with negative (malign) humor styles, and negatively with positive (benign) humor styles. Regression analyses showed that facets of neuroticism explain significant part of humor styles variance. Self-consciousness is the strongest predictor for affiliative humor, and immoderation is the strongest for self- enhancing humor. The strongest predictor for aggresive humor is anger, and for self- defeating humor the strongest predictor is depression. For aggresive humor style, age and gender are also significant predictors. An unexpected finding was that immoderation is a positive predictor for self-enhancing humor, since we expected that all facets would be negative predictors for that humor style. Men tend to use more aggresive and self-defeating humor styles, while expression of aggresive humor styles decreases with age. Despite its limitations, this study confirmed expected association of humor styles with facets of neuroticism, and predictiveness of humor styles by facets of neuroticism.
