Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore different individual and behavioral variables a for self- disclosure on Facebook. Examined individual factors were demographic variables of age and gender personality traits, motives for using Facebook. Examined behavioral variable was unpleasant experiences with privacy breaches on sns. In study there was 385 participants (64,2% female, 35,2% male) from age of 15 to 35 who were Facebook users. Participants were asked to answer four questionnaires online: Revised Self-disclosure Scale, Motives for Facebook use, The Mini-IPIP, a 20-item short form International Personality Item Pool—Five-Factor Model measure, and questionnaire of Facebook use and available information on Facebook profile. Results showed that there was significantly higher level of self – disclosure among female participants, but there were no difference in self – disclosure considering age of participants. Higher extraversion and agreeableness and lower neuroticism were associated with higher self – disclosure. Considering motives for Facebook use, only relationship maintenance was positively correlated with self – disclosure. Negative experiences on Facebook were not significant for level of self – disclosure. Participants hwo report higher levels of self – disclosure have diferent behaviour on Facebook. They update their Facebook status more frequently, have their own photograph set as profile picture, and publish private activities and feelingmore often.
