Abstract

As a canonical Renaissance writer and a person with an intriguing biography Marin Držić’s life as well as his oeuvre have always had an influence on the Croatian novelists, poets and playwrights alike. After the introduction, this article discusses modern concepts of cultural memory and reasons for remembering Držić in the modern times; the analysis focuses on the works of modern Croatian writers belonging to different genres, especially those in which the character of Marin Držić represents the cult and symbolic place of cultural memory, and his work represents an intertextual template, such as Matković’s play The General and His Fool, Šehović’s novel The Otter, Šnajder’s play Držić’s Dream, Mujičić−Senker and Škrabe’s play A Prank on Stanac, and several lyrical poems (N. Milićević, T. Petrasov Marović, Z. Mrkonjić and L. Paljetak).
