Abstract

We all sometimes find ourselves in situations where we misinterpret what we hear or read, we are unable to recall words we wanted to use or we have long pauses in speech. These are all characteristics of aphasic speech. Nevertheless, we can only talk of aphasia, the inability to comprehend and formulate language, as a consequence of brain injury. In this thesis I will give an overview of basic knowledge in the field of aphasia. Aphasia is defined as an acquired language and speech disorder, which manifests itself through all language modalities (listening, speaking, reading and writing), and doesn't depend on the senses of hearing and sight. This paper gives an overview of the causes of aphasia (damage to the dominant hemisphere of the brain caused by stroke, tumor of traumatic brain injury) and emphasizes the necessity of prevention due to the fact that today's lifestyle, unfortunately, gives a good foundation for the development of the factors that lead to aphasia. The paper also gives a basic classification of two different types of aphasia, expressive and receptive aphasia, which is the basis for other classifications, and talks about their main symptoms. In the case of expressive aphasia, the most affected part of the speech is the verbal expression, while in the case of receptive aphasia understanding is more affected than the verbal expression. The paper treats both classic aphasia and special aphasia cases such as bilingual aphasia and aphasia in sign language. The paper concludes with descriptions of diagnosis and rehabilitation of aphasia in today's speech and language therapy practice.
