Abstract

Speech is a social phenomenon and its development is possible only in human environment. One of its most important functions is the realization of communication through which a person is able to share its own thoughts, views, wishes and needs with others in the social world. Every person is born with the predisposition to develop the speech but when, how and will it develop at all depends on number of biological, sociological and psychological factors. Hearing and listening are a prerequisite for the development of speech. Speech can be developed only if all parts of the auditory system function properly. Malfunction of one of these parts leads to hearing loss because of which a hearing aid is being introduced. Among these hearing aids the most prominent are cochlear implants and traditional hearing aids. The aim of this paper was to show the results concerning the usefulness and the use of hearing aids and their impact on the quality of life of their users. The results showed that among the essential factors important for the development of hearing and listening main influence have the chronological age at the time of implantation and the duration of rehabilitation of hearing and speech.
