Abstract

This paper explores specific questions related to Czech literary and cultural underground of the 1970s and the 1980s. The author starts from »zero point« and first tries to define this socio-cultural phenomenon. He then analyses categories that logically emerge from the attempts of definition. For the members of the movement these categories were unquestionable and stable and this is why the author explores classifications of underground as hermetic, apolitical, inflexible and exclusive when it comes to official culture and literature in the light of cultural, historical-political and everyday practices of the time. The aim is to provide an answer to the following question: What becomes of the said categories when they are analyzed critically
