Abstract

The paper examines grading with the emphasis on the grading techniques in the high-school Sociology classes. In the theoretical part of the paper we explain basic terminology guidelines connected with grading and basic grading characteristics. Grade, as a final product of the grading process is also explained, as well as the factors affecting the formation of the grade and the errors in grading. Furthermore, we also describe main grading techniques that are used in the school grading system. Finally, we present main research conducted in Croatia on the topic of attitudes and knowledge of teachers concerning grading. In the empirical part of the paper, we examined the application of the grading techniques of the high-school Sociology professors in the state grammar schools in Zagreb. Research was done on 10 participants and was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Obtained data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. Given the small size of the sample and the exploratory type of research, the obtained data isn’t available for generalization. According to the obtained results, state grammar school professors of Sociology use the same grading techniques, “classic” grading techniques that are time-saving. They find the combination of the different grading techniques the most useful. Also, they expressed the will for changes in their way of grading. They would like to use grading techniques that activates the student more often but because of the limiting factors like lack of time in the class, extensiveness of the teaching materials and large number of students in the classes, that isn’t possible. Participants agreed that notes about the student contribute to the final grade, but they are divided about the issue of the final grade being an arithmetic mean of all grades. Also, participants stated that State Matura in the subject of Sociology has contributed to the development of their grading system, especially in the aspect of formatting questions on the written exams.
