Abstract

This paper analyses alternative club cultures in Zagreb through field research of a specific segement and form of a musical event (techno/house party) using direct observation technique. Interpretation was based on postsubcultural sociological theory with focus on theory of subcultural capital by Sarah Thornton. The given results show that the modification and sustainability of the subcultural capital, nowadays barely visible, are dependent upon organiser and place of the event. Music genre and type of the audience it attracts make the organiser true embodiment of the subcultural capital. Thus, musical preferences and social network further remain viable elements of the subcultural capital existent within diverse club scenes. Basic rituals, already present in the 90s rave culture, like dancing, drug consumption and specufic interactions eliminate potential elitism or separation within the scene. Also, formal institutional preconditions like architecture of the space, used props, security and time managment make possible distinctions even more blurred.
