Abstract

Regarding form, frequency and function, there are significant differences between the German and Croatian passive constructions. This article offers a contrastive analysis of the passive voice in two steps, the first theoretical and the second experimental. The author wants to give answers to the following questions: 1) Which morph-syntactic structures are rendered as grammatical passive in Croatian and German? 2) Do the functional values of these structures match? 3) Which Croatian passive and non-passive constructions can be seen as potential German passive constructions? The goal of the analysis is a systematic portrayal of experimentally devised answers to the third question as well as an evaluation of recorded results.
