Abstract
This paper discusses Shakespeare's status during his lifetime and its development after his
death. The aim is to show through the prism of editions and appearances in different collections
his rise from an author whose works were published anonymously to one of the greatest known
authors who has become a figure of authority when it comes to usage of the English language.
The paper primarily discusses the reception of his works until 1616 and by the end of the 17th
century, but it also aims to discard some incorrect opinions about Shakespeare such as, that he
was not really that popular during his lifetime or that he never thought about print when writing
his works. After the 17th century is covered, the paper mainly concentrates on the folio editions,
anthologies and biographies published mainly in the 18th and partly in the 19th century, as well
as the most important publishers who are the most deserving for the representation of
Shakespeare we have today.
