Abstract

This thesis represents previously unstudied paintings from Dubrovnik’s art heritage from the Baroque Period, which depict St. Bernard of Clairvaux – the painting Christ on Cross Embraces St. Bernard located in the Church of St. Joseph and Miraculuous Lactation of St. Bernard in the eastern sacristy of St. Blaise's Church. The iconographic themes found on the two paintings, known as Amplexus Bernardi and Lactatio Bernardi, emerged from legends of the saint's life, and their development and distribution were further incited by St. Bernard's spirituality, as he is known to be a promoter of christcentric and Marian devotions. These two themes are the most common in the iconography of St. Bernard, which is evident from a great number of their portrayals in various art mediums and techniques, the earliest depictions dating from the beginning of the 14th century. The thesis also proposes the attribution and the date of execution of the two paintings, which, by means of stylistic comparative analysis, have been identified as works made in the second half of the 17th century, in the workshop of the Italian painter Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Il Baciccio (Genoa, 1639 – Rome, 1709).
