Abstract

This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from two books were translated from Croatian into English (Bertić, Živko. 1902. Ženski udesi: Tri pripovijesti (Parskina sreća - Sirota - Udala se). Zagreb: Naklada "Matice hrvatske" and Popović, Edo. 2007. Oči. Zagreb: Naklada OceanMore), and three from English into Croatian (UNHCR Resettlement Handbook. 2011., Savage, Mike. 2015. Social Class in the 21st Century. Penguin Random House UK. and McGonigal, Kelly. 2012. The Willpower Instinct. How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It. London: Pearson.) The discussion focused on the translation of metaphors from Croatian into English on the basis of metaphors encountered during the process of translating the excerpts of novels Oči by Edo Popović and Ženski udesi by Živko Bertić. The emphasis was put on the definition of metaphors, the most important approaches and strategies for translating metaphors, a detailed analysis of particular examples of metaphors and the most important issues considering their translation.
