Abstract

All Croatian dialects, including their local speeches, experience sudden changes in the modern world due to modernization, globalization, the increasing use of technology and the media. People are moving and communicating more so their speeches are becoming more similar. This paper describes the local speech of Donja Voća, or rather the aspect of the syntax of this speech as it is today. It is one of the local speeches from the Ivanec area. It also examines the attitudes of Croatian language teachers to the inclusion of regional dialects as well as other regional and dialect topics in teaching. It is apparent from the teacher’s attitudes what their teaching practice actually is and to what extent they allow the use of regional dialect in teaching. Even though a great number of theoretical papers show how interesting and important this topic really is, this research shows that teachers are not sufficiently aware of this and are generally less familiar with such topics. Regional dialects definitely have an important place in the teaching of Croatian language. This should not be neglected or suppressed, and teachers should point out to students the importance of regional dialects and the differences between regional dialects and standard language.
