Abstract

Language categorization shows cross-cultural differences between languages, the ways how individuals speak about their surroundingsand the means of cognizing these surroundings. Within the various forms of color categorizationconducted by speakers of disparate languages, differences can be noticed inthe ways of organizing and labeling different color categories. This paper introduces basic informations on language, culture and cognition, presents theories about the relationships between language, culture and cognition and display a theoretical approach for cultural linguistics and language categorization with an emphasison color categorization. Furthermore, the paper presents a description of the conducted research withDutch, Greek and Croatian speakers. The main goal ofthis research is to collectdata on how much color categories are being discerned withinthe color spectrum of green-blue-purple by speakers of the concerned languages and on how differently these speakers classify colors within this spectrum. Consequently, the paper will proceed with presenting the focal samples as selected by the participantsand the results of naming the categories (which have been separated from the spectrumby the participants). The results of the research show that Dutch speakers categorizevisibly smaller amountsof colourscompared to Croatian speakers. Considering that, Dutch participants label these categories in a more simple way. Greek participants onaverage categorizemore different colours compared to Croatian and Dutch participants. The results of focal colorsshow that the choices of the focal sample are more diverse than expected. In this research male participants,on average, differentiate more color categories in relation to female participants.
