Abstract

Despite all the achievements of the modern civilization, when it comes to gender relations it still shares some characteristics with the traditional, patriarchal society. Women in contemporary Europe have still not achieved full recognition, and one of the areas in which it is clearly visible is that of reproduction and reproductive rights. Women’s right to make decisions about their own bodies , health and lives is a fundamental human right. This right is opposed by the conservative and clerical tendencies, referring to the Catholic doctrine and a discourse on morality. Croatia, Ireland and Poland are predominantly Catholic European countries. In all three the Catholic Church clearly impacts politics. This impact is reflected in abortion laws, with Ireland and Poland being among the European countries with the most restrictive abortion laws, and Croatian women having their reproductive rights gradually and covertly derogated for years. Opinion polls on abortion and women’s reproductive rights in all three countries have revealed that the public opinions are more liberal than the current policies and (draft) laws. So the question arises: what “stands in the way” of modernizing the laws that clearly clash with the views of the public? The answer to this question is somewhat specific for each of the abovementioned countries, but it can still be reduced to one common characteristic – the historical role of the Church and the powerful political influence of the conservative forces.
