Abstract

Family policy focuses on the social position and structure of the family. Its measures are directed towards providing financial, social and educational assistance to families in difficult situations. Conservative family policy, on the other hand, aims at protecting the family and marriage by preserving and advocating for traditional family values under the influence of conservative catholic thought. Conservative family associations like GROZD, U ime obitelji, Vigilare and Hrast address the issues of the family and marital community and launch numerous actions and initiatives aimed at raising citizens’ awareness of the problems that endanger the position of the family in Croatian society. The action analysis has identified a network of conservative family as sociations whose main activities lie in the field of civic activism. Through organization of civic initiatives, referendums, provision of information through their websites and portals, implementation of health education programs, public and media statements, conservative family associations call for the responsibility of all citizens. Although there is a significant number of individuals and legal entities identified in the conservative network, it has been shown that the complexity of their relationships and joint actions give an illusion of a greater number of conservative activists. Thus, the question whether there is a conservative movement is inappropriate and the potential particular and political goals of the analyzed associations need to be addressed.
