Abstract

A person's beliefs about what romantic relationships should be like can determine the way they will act towards their partner and how they will deal with problems in their relationship. The aim of this study was twofold: the first goal was to validate the Implicit theories about relationships questionnaire (Knee et al., 2003) and the Accommodation Scale (Rusbult et al., 1991) on a Croatian sample, and the second was to examine the relationship between implicit theories about relationships and accommodative behaviour. The study inclueded 973 participants aging between 18 and 49 years, who were involved in a heterosexual dating relationship. We confirmed the original two-factor structure of the Implicit theories about relationships questionnaire (Knee et al., 2003). We did not confirm the original four-factor structure of the Accommodation scale (Rusbult et al., 1991), but a two-factor solution emerged in accordance with the theoretical dimensions of activity and passivity. Implicit theories about relationships were significant predictors of both active and passive accommodation strategies. A stronger growth belief, and also a weaker destiny belief predicted a stronger tendency for employing active accommodation strategies. Meanwhile, a stronger destiny belief predicted a stronger tendency for employing passive accommodation strategies. This study can contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between people's beliefs about relationships and their behaviour during conflict, and has practical implications for couple therapy and education.
